Cars driving on the interstate and local highways encounter large trucks called 18 wheelers, semi-tractor trailers, and other vehicles weighing in excess of 10,000 pounds. According to the federal government in 2005, tractor trailers  were involved in an estimated 144,742 fatal and non-fatal crashes nationwide.
